<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The brief you have received is to create a magazine ad for a new product - not an existing brand or product, but one you have invented! You need to showcase your Photoshop skills for this, combining multiple image layers and carefully designed text, but also be clear on who the ad is aimed at and how you have designed your text to appeal to this audience/market, including consideration of how you have represented people or places (use of stereotypes or countertypes). There should be evidence that you have researched and used ideas or strategies from existing ads. You will present an evaluation of your completed work.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">THE STEPS

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Learn the 'media language' used to describe shot types.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Research existing ads, highlighting persuasive techniques they use and what they include.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Develop and practice Photoshop skills.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Create your own product idea and list what will feature in your ad.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Review learning from existing ads, and pick out points from any 3 ads that you will use in your ad. You may want to make changes to your idea as a result.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Gather/shoot the images you need for your ad.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Draft your ad and get peer feedback.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Finalise the ad.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Take part in an 'expo' where you will present your work at a 'trade fair' for new products.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Submit a short Evaluation of your work.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP WORK?
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This is intended as an individual task; the video tasks will be group work.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">However, you can team up to:

develop an idea

develop packaging

create and share a company logo

come up with multiple slogans to pick from

cast and shoot a model, so long as you each use a different photo

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">You could work in small groups on the same product so long as you each produce a distinctively different ad, with different photos of the model and background, plus a different slogan. You need to get permission from your teacher for any shared work.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">WHAT THE AD MUST INCLUDE
Just as with your practice ad, there are minimum requirements on what your main ad must include:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">a model/character (a photo YOU have taken) removed (cropped) from the background of the original image, and who is clearly appropriate for your target market

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">a 2nd image as a background <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">(a photo YOU have taken) [you may include several images! you may also try a graphic design approach like the Diet Pepsi ad we looked at]

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">a product shot (you can use an existing image as long as you change the packaging)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">a main slogan - you could include a secondary slogan with...

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">...a suitable website address (you could use social media icons/address too)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the company logo (you can use an existing company, but may wish to challenge yourself with a new company and logo - you can share work on this)

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">you could include a QR code if you're using a competition as part of your ad idea

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">STEP 4: DETAILING YOUR PRODUCT/AD IDEA
By now you've all learned and applied the key media language (use handouts, also available on this blog, if you need to remind yourself of any terms), researched a range of ads and practiced your Photoshop skills.

Some of you have already created your main product idea, and started working on what the ad will include. All of you need to list the following and submit this through Showbie (you can copy/paste the text from this post). <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">You can use short bullet points if you wish; you don't need to submit a lot of writing.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">PRODUCT TYPE: state what type of product this will be, eg soft drink, clothing, footwear, jewellry, games, technology, scent (perfume/aftershave), cosmetics/toiletries. Be specific: if its a soft drink, for example, what flavour; is it a diet, caffeine-free, added vitamins (health) or energy drink?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">PACKAGING: What will the product look like? You might find it useful to use an image of an existing product to illustrate this, but make sure you actually describe the shape, colour, any text/logo on your packaging.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">COMPANY: If you're brave enough to come up with your own company and its logo, describe this (if not, state which existing company - that's the brand, not the product - you will use).
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">WHO IS IT AIMED AT: Referring to at least age (give a range), gender/s and wealth (WAG!), clearly state who this will be aimed at. Think carefully if you are targeting an older age group - will you be able to get a suitable model, and do you understand what works for that age range?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">MY AD IDEA + HOW IT APPEALS TO MY MARKET: Briefly but clearly explain your ad idea, stating how this will appeal to your target audience. Include a description of:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">MODEL/CHARACTER(S): The age, look, pose/action of the model.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">SLOGAN: If you have several ideas make sure you note these, but highlight the one you like best! If you're including a secondary slogan (as we saw with the Pepsi ad) detail this too.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">URL: What website address/es will you use? If you are including social media links/QR code, detail these.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">WHAT MAKES MY AD IDEA GREAT!
In a nutshell, what will make your ad stand out from the many others we will see in December?!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">STEP 5: UPDATING + APPLYING AD RESEARCH
Find/pick out any 3 ads which link to the market/product type you will be working on, and annotate (write on) these to indicate what aspects/strategies/ideas you will use from real ads. Remember that you could look through actual magazines to find these, you don't have to rely on a Google search!

Come up with a VERY short story that can be explained in no more than 3 sentences.

Plan and photograph at least 1 example of each shot type/angle (see list below)

Present this as a comic book (or use Keynote if you don't have a comic maker app)

Provide short text boxes to make the story clear, but also label each shot type/angle so its clear that (a) you've used each shot type/angle and (b) you can correctly identify these!

Please check your submitted work on Showbie for feedback.

Your Showbie class codes if you haven't joined yet:

9E: 3JKQ5
9K: VVV7L
9L: 3UZEW

If you can't find your handout you can use the PowerPoint in this post to remind yourself what the shots are and how to identify them.

The shot range goes (I'm just using abbreviations as you can refer to the handout):

ECU

CU

MCU

MS

MLS

LS

ELS

There are also angles:

low

mid

high

dutch

You can also use:

two shot (2 people in the shot; three shot is 3...)

OTS (over the shoulder shot)

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'VE LOST OR NOT GOT SOME PHOTOS:

Don't panic!

This is a simple exercise - we don't need a masterpiece, just a clear demonstration of your applying the full range of camera shots!!!

SOLUTION1: You can take some new photos and change the storyline accordingly (remember, we said a story that you can explain in at most 3 sentences).

SOLUTION2: You can also re-use and edit some photos: by CROPPING you can make a LS into a MLS or MS for example, and you could even create a dutch angle by spinning the image around a little!

While Final Cut Pro X is the main software you will use for video editing, for image editing it is Photoshop.

Use the guides below to help you develop your skills with Photoshop, a skill that should come in handy for many other subjects and opportunities outside of school too! There is also a Photoshop iPad app.

After you watch a quick runthrough you will be aiming to create a slightly silly image like this by following the steps in the PowerPoint and summarised below:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">10 STEPS TO COMPLETE TODAY'S PRACTICE TASK

Create a new folder in My Documents called Media

Save the 4 images (below the PowerPoint) into this (just right-click and save link as, and check its saving into the Media folder)

Open Photoshop! (Start-All programs-Adobe Cs6-Photoshop)

Set up a new document (File, New), changing the name to Elephant practice; Preset to international (A4 should appear, then the preset will switch to show 'custom'); swapping the width and height settings (W to 297mm, H 210mm); Background contents transparent.

SAVE THE DOCUMENT RIGHT AWAY!!! (File, Save As, select your Media folder) iF YOU GET A POP-UP ASKING IF YOU WANT TO KEEP COMPATIBILITY, CLICK OK.

Open the 4 images into Photoshop using either the 'MiniBridge' tool or the simpler File-Open. Read 'THINGS THAT TEND TO GO WRONG' (bottom of the post) if you can't see the MiniBridge option...

Add these to your Elephant practice document by right-clicking on the layer for each of these in turn; duplicate layer; and select which document to add it to.

Resize and reposition the images. Put the Coke ad layer underneath the elephant layers, resized to fill the frame.

Have a go with the magic wand and eraser tool to get rid of the background from the simplest image (on the desk). Use the eyeball (click it off) on the Layers toolbox (on the right) to get other layers to disappear! If you feel confident enough, have a go at one or both of the other 2.

Save it as a jpg or png file (File-Save As). Submit it into the Showbie assignment 'Elephant practice' by taking a photo of the screen with your iPad (thanks to Lydia from 9E for that helpful suggestion!).

At this point you can either help others, and develop useful transferrable skills, or have a go at the additional tools illustrated in the PowerPoint: opacity, text, filters...
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">THE POWERPOINT WITH SCREENSHOTS

To help you recall your learning on the SAS of Media (Shots, Angles, Semiotics) your first task is to come up with a short rap featuring some of the terms you have been introduced to so far.

Everyone should try to come up with at least one rhyming couplet (simply: two lines that rhyme!) featuring one or more SAS term. You could think of a rhyme for a term (example1 below) or just use the term in a sentence giving an example of how it works (example2 below)

It can be silly but not rude!

In groups of around 4, pick out your best lines (at least two rhyming couplets, or 4 lines); there will be a prize for the best group. You could use your comic book photo-story for inspiration.

EXAMPLE1:
The captains cap on her head was used to connote
Authority and power, not just a love of boats!

EXAMPLE2:
The camera angle for the victim was high
Connoting he was about to meet his maker in the sky!

TASK 2: CROP + COMBINE 2 IMAGES

You will have at least one full period to work on Task 2 and an optional Task 3.

You will be shown how to use a series of tools in Photoshop to combine multiple images and crop out the background of shots, and your task will be to use these tools to:

in your My Documents, click <file> <new folder="">, name this Media</new></file>

open Photoshop. Start ticking off the tools you have successfully used.

set up and save into your Media folder a new A4, landscape, 300dpi document as 'Elephant practice'

add a new background layer

make it fill the document

crop a second image (remove the background entirely)

add this to your saved document

add some text

save this as a png file

submit through Showbie

Those very confident in their Photoshop skills will work through this exercise quite quickly, and can either have a go at Task 3 below or develop a useful transferrable skill by helping out others who are struggling. If you are doing that, always describe only, never take over the mouse!

Everyone needs to submit their completed 'Elephant' image via Showbie

TASK 3: AD MOCK-UP

Create a rough, mock-up of an ad for any brand.

You will have very limited time for this task (just like working in the media industry!), so focus on getting all the components in; if you have time left, you can polish it up!!!

SHORT REPORT/ANALYSIS:
When submitting this through Showbie, provide a single paragraph (OR annotate your ad) explaining:

what Photoshop tools you have used (a simple list)

who your target audience was

what persuasive techniques you used to appeal to this audience

try to use precise Media terminology, especially semiotics

Your 1st report will be based on an assessment of this work.

WHAT YOU NEED TO INCLUDE:
You need at least 2 images for this task; you cannot simply use an existing ad (we did this for the elephant practice). Use the PowerPoint with screenshots (in this post) to remind yourself of how to find/use photoshop tools.

Your ad should:

combine at least 2 images, where you have ...

removed the background from one

some text, including a campaign slogan

it must be clear what product is being advertised and to whom (what audience) it is being aimed at

Think of the basic audience categories: WAG - Wealth (ABC1 v C2DE), Age (younger, older), Gender
This ad features the bare minimum you need:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">a model/character

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">removed (cropped) from the background of the original image

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">the company logo

It also has:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">a 2nd slogan

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">company URL (web address)

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">graphics (the bubbles)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">ANALYSIS (IF THIS WAS YOURS)
To create this image I used the page setup settings to make it A4; duplicate layer to add images to my document; the magic wand and eraser tools to remove the background; the zoom tool to get my eraser work right; the move tool and free transform to move around and resize images; the type tool for the slogan; the layers tool to rearrange the layer order. My product was Diet Pepsi which I wanted to aim at a young adult female audience of about 15-34, so I chose a glamorous model with long luxurious hair and heavy make-up (especially the lipstick) to connote to the audience that this is a glamorous drink! I suspect her arms have been made thinner in Photoshop, but she is not a super-skinny model. The medium long shot helps me to focus on the arm stuck out and hand on her hip, signifying/connoting attitude. The bubbles graphic and having her eyes closed also connote a daydream, while the swirly design also subtly signify energy. My female audience would want (aspire) to be like this glamorous figure and to also escape from their boring jobs or study for a moment by sipping a Pepsi, although the ad could also appeal to some men attracted to the model. This ad could appeal to a wealthy (ABC1) audience who might see themselves as like this model, with her expensive dress, or a less welathy (C2DE) audience who would aspire to be like this.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">BASIC ANNOTATION OF THE AD
You could use annotation to show where you've used Photoshop tools, or to incorporate analysis of what you've included and why, if you're less confident at writing paragraphs.

This example is basic, simply highlighting the features you should be including in your practice ad.
Does your age group need protecting from companies marketing junk food and sugary drinks? There are already restrictions on what can be advertised - and where (there are limits on how close to a school billboards featuring such ads can be!), not to mention when (to avoid targeting children's TV there are also regulations about the times when some ads can be broadcast on TV).

Rather than summarise this article (though I've highlighted some quotes), I've copied in the text below; you might find this useful when thinking about your own ad and when you come to evaluate your work.
Companies spend a lot of money to place their ads in certain magazines that they think the type of people likely to be interested in their product/brand read. If you are targeting a youth market, you wouldn't waste money buying space in this magazine ...

WHO is this magazine aimed at (what demographic) and HOW have the designers done this? Pick out details that help your argument.

However, if you were targeting an older (maybe 50+, retired), wealthy market, this sort of publication would fit well. This may primarily appeal to males, but the magazine presents images of couples to help appeal to women too.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Some brands will appeal to a specific age range, gender or income level, but others will have appeal with multiple demographics. However, the brands will often produce specific products to target narrower demographics. Coke Zero targets men with its black packaging, while Diet Coke targets women, and the advertising reflects this - but they're still both Coca Cola products.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">GROUP RESEARCH + PRESENTATION IN 5 STAGES

You can use pen + paper or iPad to take notes. You will be getting folders shortly.
You should all be writing down the same notes.

You will find some useful websites and links after the list of 5 stages.

STAGE 1: Discuss and all list products/brands aimed at the demographic your group has been given.
Aim for at least 10, with everyone suggesting at least one. You can search online, but probably won't need to.

If you're working on one of the Macs, you need to: (1) use the login your teacher gives you, NOT your usual login (2) save any files into a My Documents folder called 9E (or whichever your class is: 9J, 9K, 9L)

STAGE 2: Find online + save 10+ different ads you think are aimed at your demographic.
You can have more than 1 for the same brand/product so long as they're different ads. Everyone should contribute at least one. You will need to share these by email or memory stick - agree on one person to send these to. If you're using Google images, you'll get a better quality image if you click on the thumbnail and save it from the next web page (though this doesn't always work). Right-click to select 'save image as...', and follow the instructions above about saving into a specific folder if working on a Mac.

STAGE 3: Each analyse at least 1 ad, briefly describing + listing any persuasive techniques you see.
Write or type your notes. Each group should aim to sample about 10 ads, and everyone must analyse at least one ad.
From the initial lessons we considered a wide range of techniques:

uniqueness (USP or distinctive, maybe odd, look)

product shot (and how its being used)

background, location

colour

font: style (and possible links to something else); size; positioning; use of UPPER case (capitals) or lower case (or even a mix of the two); effects on the fonts;

slogans

humour

links/references to wider culture

social media links (perhaps a viral style)

positive, persuasive language - perhaps suggesting what type of benefits you get or person you become by using it

statistics - they have to be factual by law, governed by the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority)

quotes, reviews

model: perhaps a direct representation of the audience targeted; an aspirational figure (a type of person the audience would like to be, or be seen as); a celebrity (also an aspirational figure)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">At this stage we will share some initial findings, and discuss how different or similar we think the techniques will be for appealing to each different demographic.

STAGE 4: Identify 5 or more key techniques used to target this particular audience/market.
Each of you take it in turns to take the others through what techniques you spotted, clearly identifying how these were used in the ads. One person should keep a list of all the techniques listed.
Once you've gone through them all, pick out 5 you think are most significant (you can add more if there's time), and that you have at least two specific examples of.

STAGE 5: Put your findings into an attractive format that can be screened on a computer.
If you want to use iPads to do this, make sure you will be able to save the work as a PDF, .doc, .ppt or similar file that can be shared on a desktop computer: these will be added afterwards to this post. Your teacher will write his email on the whiteboard for you.
You should present:

Indicate your demographic, and who worked on the presentation, in a title slide.

List some of the brands you initially thought of - if you used any online searches you could explain these.

A gallery of the different ads you looked at should follow.

Next, list all or most of the techniques you observed (you don't need examples with these, just a simple list).

Now the key part: take 1 key technique at a time and provide images of examples you picked out from this. You could crop the ad to focus on the detail being discussed.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">There will be a prize for the group voted to have produced the most helpful presentation - you can use each others' work when planning your own brands later!

At this stage, you have not yet been equipped with 'media language'...

However, as we discuss these examples, you can start thinking about what design features you would want to use in your own ad (as well as things to avoid!)...

The worksheet we will use:

If you want to look at what type of things older Media students have done, you can look at their coursework blogs and find years of film and music video work on my channel (look in the playlists section to find these gathered together). Note that many of the film pieces are horror!

There may have been (depending on the lesson) some background music playing; this is the playlist:

THE THREE PRODUCTIONS:
Magazine advertisement/s for a new product or brand you have created
A TV ad for one of these new products or brands
A section of a new TV programme you have created

We don't do music video this year, but you might in GCSE, and would as part of Media A-Level. You will, however, learn and apply the sort of technical skills used for this video...

Here's the video we played you, which you can always refer back to:

We will make you green screen kings/queens in some simple steps. Please ask for help at ANY time if you get a bit stuck!

You need to be quite quick to get through all 7 steps in just 4 hours...

STEP 1: PLAY AROUND WITH SOME PRE-LOADED CLIPS. TRY OUT TOOLS

I'd prefer you all do this individually, but you can pair up so long as you each give it a try.

In Final Cut, you will find an 'Event' called 'GreenScreen Celeb'. Click on it, then click FILE, <file>and then on </file>NEW PROJECT. Replace the date with your own name as the project file and press OK. Your blank project file should now appear on the timeline (along the bottom) ready for you to drag and drop clips into and around.<new><project> </project></new>

The 'Libraries' window on the top left lists 'Libraries' (the four squares icon), within which there are 'Events' (square with a star). You should be clicked on the Event called GreenScreen Celeb.

You can rename the 'project' file just by clicking on its name.

Here's a couple of examples of intentionally silly videos Media students have created using the green screen...

GlobalGaga...

Ozzy Osbourne...
This was what we term a 'mini-vid', not a full video ... a mini one!

This one didn't use the green screen, but takes a similar approach of recording different people lip-synching lines...
Faithless...

STEP 2: CREATE AN IDEA
Don't worry about 'mastering' the software, help is available, but this short exercise should help you see how you can use the green screen effect for your own idea.

Individually or in pairs, I'd like you to come up with an idea for one of the following:

a (very!) short film

a spoof of one or more scenes from an existing film or TV show

a music video (about 1 minute of a song)

You can use this site to get an MP3 for music, or video clips as green screen background.

You will access to some wigs, hats and other props, and can bring other costume, props, or makeup for the second session, though filming needs to be very quick to give you time to edit.

Once you've all thought of an idea, we will share these and then you can decide whether to all work on one, or split into two teams.

STEP 3: PLAN THE IDEA
As rule 1 is keep it simple, lets first of all make sure your idea is something you can shoot and edit in a very short space of time!
Once that is agreed, you need to consider...

Leadership: who is the director, in overall control and organising everything below? Time is very tight, so it should the person most likely to get this all done!

Filming: do you want to share camera duties, or for one person to do this?

Script: basic/key points - naming + describing characters, describing the action, and writing out any dialogue

Green screen: what parts can you shoot on the green screen, and what image or video will be behind it? Someone could focus on finding these images/video clips.

Cast: who plays who? You should all appear, even if only briefly.

Costume, props, makeup, locations list: what do you need, where will you shoot, and do you need to wait until the second session to bring stuff from home for any shots?

A list of shots to film, in the quickest order!

STEP 4: SHOOT THE IDEA
Some simple tips:

Usually we'd work with tripods to avoid shakiness, but there really isn't enough time to keep re-setting tripod legs!

You can use the tripod for the green screen shots though

Try to shoot the same scenes from more than one angle - you'll have a much better film/video!

Talk the cast through each shot before you press record, make sure they know what they're to say/do, where they move to

Count them in, going '3, 2, 1...' (skip the word action then!)

Don't be a perfectionist - its just a bit of fun! Shoot and move on!

STEP 5: UPLOAD THE FOOTAGE
Just ask when you're at this stage! We need to get it off the memory cards and onto the computer for editing.

STEP 6: EDIT THE FOOTAGE
You've been shown the basic tools you need, and how to apply the green screen effect ... but as you're new to this, I'd be amazed if you didn't need help, so just ask when stuck or unsure!
If you somehow get enough time, you could also experiment with titles and other effects in Final Cut, but you need to stop no later than 20 minutes before we finish so that you can...

STEP 7: SHARE THE FILM/VIDEO!
So long as you leave at the very least 20 minutes before we finish, there should be enough time to turn your editing into a video file that you can take away with you on a memory stick, and that I can put on the big screen!
